Draft strategy for the 2025–26 NBA season
A framework for testing punts, tier breaks, and roster fit without pretending one draft board fits every league.
The two questions before draft night
Before you open your draft room, answer two questions: what categories will you punt and where do tiers actually break. Everything else — VBD, ECR, tier sheets — is downstream.
Punt builds, ranked
Common 9-cat punt hypotheses to test against the actual room include:
- Punt FT% + Punt TO — anchors a Giannis/Embiid build and frees you to draft volume bigs.
- Punt AST — opens up elite wings + bigs without sacrificing the rest.
- Punt FG% — shooter-heavy, 3PM-dominant, requires precise late-round volume picks.
The mistake most managers make is treating the punt as a constraint. It's a target. Z-scores normalized against your punted categories will turn negative-marginal players into positive contributors.
Where tiers actually break
Look at contextual value gaps, not rank numbers alone. A useful tier threshold depends on the source distribution and uncertainty; do not treat a fixed rating gap as universal. The beta can update the board from rolling category coverage as provider polling or manual picks arrive.
What to do at a pick
Start with the available tier, your first-pick build implications, positional scarcity in that room, and playoff schedule. A named player recommendation requires a dated projection/ranking source; Pick Pilot does not currently have a licensed preseason feed.
Closing
Draft is the only week of the season where one decision compounds for 24 weeks. Don't wing it.
